Mississippi Plan Would Increase Teacher Salaries To Make State More Competitive

Republican Lieutenant Governor Delbert Hosemann and Senate Education Committee Chairman Dennis DeBar announced the proposal Monday in a public policy forum. The plan would increase teachers’ pay by an average of $4,700 over two years, attempting to move the state away from its low national ranking for educators’ salaries. “This pay plan will make us more competitive with our neighbors,” said DeBar, a Republican from Leakesville, Mississippi. “Hopefully, this will entice or provide some incentive, some motivation for teachers to stay in the profession as well as stay in Mississippi,” DeBar said, according to the Mississippi Today news website....

Mister Charisma

Are there any good guys in this intermittently juicy tale? Well, actually, some might say Ross himself is the only candidate. Bruck struggles mightily to get a fix on Ross, who died of prostate cancer in December 1992. Ambivalent at times, she wisely admits that Ross, with his considerable business and social skills, defies “facile” analysis. But in the end she believes that Ross not only abrogated legal, ethical and moral standards but-more amazing-was even perceived as the “very exemplar” of those standards by his hordes of fans....

Mitch Mcconnell Accuses Democrats Of Playing Politics As Gop Blocks Bill To Stop Shutdown

On Monday, no Republicans advanced the Democratic measure to fund the government through December 3 and suspend the debt ceiling until the end of 2022. It has raised the pressure on Congress to pass a bill to avoid a partial shutdown on Friday. But after a vote tally 48-50, far short of the 60 votes needed to pass, the Kentucky senator said the Democrats were at fault because they had known about the GOP’s opposition to raising or suspending the debt ceiling for two months, but proceeded with the vote anyway....

Romney, the 2012 Republican nominee who chose Ryan as his running mate, was responding to Trump’s tweets Thursday night slamming Ryan after the former speaker’s criticisms of the president came to light in a forthcoming book. Ryan said that Trump is worse off since he and other Republican leaders left government because they stopped him from going with “knee-jerk reactions” and “helped him make better decisions.” Ryan also said he “wanted to scold” Trump all the time, according to an excerpt of American Carnage: On the Front Lines of the Republican Civil War and the Rise of President Trump by Politico Magazine chief political correspondent Timothy Alberta, obtained by The Washington Post Thursday....
