The star-studded event was hosted by Taika Waititi and Rita Ora, with huge performances from Muse, OneRepublic, Ava Max, David Guetta, Gorillaz, and Lewis Capaldi.
Celebrating some of the biggest names in music, the event was attended by the likes of Taylor Swift, Stormzy, Lewis Capaldi, and more.
Harry Styles led the nominations with a total of seven awards up for grabs. He was up for Best Video, Best Song, and Best Artist as well as Best Live, Best Pop, Biggest Fans, and Best UK & Ireland Act.
However, the biggest winner of the night was Taylor Swift, who took home the top four awards of the ceremony: Best Artist, Best Pop, Best Video, and Best Longform Video.
Taking to the stage on four occasions, Swift thanked her fans—known as Swifties—each time.
Accepting the award for Best Artist, she said: “You have no idea how much this even means to me to do this as a career…
“There’s not a single moment I take that for granted. I love you so much, I can’t believe I get to do this as a job, and it’s all because of you. Thank you so, so much.”
Later in the evening, she accepted the award for Best Longform Video and Best Video for her re-recorded single, “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version)” from her 2012 album Red.
The video was released in November 2021 and starred Stranger Things actress Sadie Sink and Teen Wolf’s Dylan O’Brien.
Accepting the Best Long Form Video Award, Swift said: “You’re [the fans] the reason that anything has ever happened to me.
“I have been writing and directing my music videos for a long time, but this was the first short film I have made, and I felt like I learned so much about myself of how making film can be a natural extension of my storytelling just like songwriting.”
Taking to the stage for the final time to accept Best Video, Swift told the audience: “This [All Too Well] almost never happened,” adding: “I can only explain this by saying that the fans willed this to happen. I will never stop thanking you for this.”
Nicki Minaj won Best Song for “Super Freaky Girl” and took home the EMA for Best Hip Hop Act.
BTS took home the award for Biggest Fans and fellow K-pop bands Seventeen and Blackpink won Best New Act and Best Metaverse Performance respectively.
Surprisingly, Grammy-winner Harry Styles, who was up for seven awards, took home just one EMA for Best Live Performance. Unfortunately, he was not there in person to accept his award.
This year’s MTV EMA Generation Change award went to Lina Deshvar, Anna Kutova, and Anfisa Yakovina, three Ukrainian women who are activists for the humanitarian crisis.
