This comes after people around the world had watched rescuer workers’ efforts to save Rayan through a livestream, according to the New York Post, and as condolences from around the world pour in, including from Morocco’s prime minister, the president of France, and the Pope, according to The Guardian.

“Rayan’s death has renewed faith in humanity as people in different languages and from different countries express solidarity,” a villager said, Al Jazeera reported.

Rayan Oram’s funeral was attended by hundreds of mourners at the cemetery Ighran in Chefchauoen province in northern Morocco. All of the mourners could not fit into the village cemetery and prayer site but were able to offer condolences at two large tents erected in front of the grieving family’s house. Many waited hours as the funeral observed the Muslim burial rituals, Al Jazeera reported.

Rayan was trapped in a 105-foot deep well after falling into it, Newsweek reported. It became known when his father, Khalid Agoram, went looking for him and discovered him in the well on February 1.

Rescue workers tried for four days to extract Rayan while facing concerns for a potential landslide due to their efforts, Newsweek reported. They used bulldozers to dig parallel to the well to attempt to dig a horizontal tunnel to reach Rayan but stopped over concerns of the ground collapsing. Rayan’s body was extracted late Saturday.

In addition to the prime minister, Morocco’s King Mohammed VI expressed his condolences directly to Rayan’s parents, according to The Guardian.

There were also condolences that came from other countries.

“Tonight, I want to tell the family of little Rayan and the Moroccan people that we share their pain,” French President Emmanuel Macron wrote in a Facebook post.

“Rayan’s courage will stay in our memories and continue to inspire us,” AC Milan’s Algerian midfielder Ismaël Bennacer wrote on Twitter. “And so too will the devotion of the Moroccan people and of the rescuers. All my thoughts are with his family and loved ones. May Allah grant this little warrior the highest degree of paradise.”

Liverpool FC, Manchester United, FC Barcelona, and FC Sevilla also expressed condolences on their Arabic Twitter Accounts, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported.

Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and others also expressed condolences to Rayan’s parents, according to Al Jazeera.

“He unified the humanity and then left,” tweeted Amjad Taha, head of the British Middle East Center for Studies and Research. “In moments of joy and sadness, he showed us that regardless of our creed or ethnicity we will stand together. RIP #Rayan. Our thoughts &prayers R with his loved ones (family, Morocco, the world). U may be gone but U will never be forgotten.”
