The Richardson Police Department (RPD) said officers raced to the parking lot of a Starbucks located at 4151 E. Renner Road in the Dallas suburb at 7:12 p.m. on Monday, April 18 after they were notified of a shooting.
There police found Kentoria Nicole Edwards, 52, had suffered a gunshot wound. Officers arrested Tranisa Octavin Trana Watts, 23, in connection with the shooting.
In a Tuesday Facebook post, an RPD spokesperson said: “The first officer to arrive spotted the identified suspect, Watts, attempting to leave the location with a child and apprehended her.
“Additional officers arriving located the victim, Edwards, and immediately began life-saving measures after observing a gunshot wound.
“Paramedics arrived and transported Edwards to the hospital where she was pronounced deceased. The child was unharmed.”
An RPD spokesperson said officers later learned that Watts had asked to see her child and Edwards agreed they could meet at the Starbucks.
Edwards was the child’s grandmother and had full custody of the child, according to the police.
Police allege that, during the visit, Watts pulled out a handgun, shot Edwards and tried to leave the Starbucks with the child.
Police charged Watts with capital murder.
A homicide investigation has been launched and anyone with information is asked to call the RPD at 972-744-4800.
