For “More Light,” Mascis brought in a little help, including My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields, who was an early influence of Mascis’s, and Guided by Voices’ Robert Pollard, who added back-up vocals on three tracks. On those songs, especially “Same Day,” Mascis’s solo work sounds distinctly different from his Dinosaur Jr. CDs.

Where his earlier material spoke to the feelings of the Nirvana generation, “More Light” has the perspective of someone looking back and realizing that today is actually better than yesterday. “I locked the door and hit the floor that was my life/Now look at everything, it’s beautiful,” Mascis sings on “Same Day.” Ultimately, “More Light” picks up where Dinosaur Jr. went extinct. And Mascis shows he has evolved.
