If you own funds from those companies, unload them, says Roy Weitz, publisher of a watchdog Web site, fundalarm.com–but don’t sell in a panic. “They’ll be pretty clean for a while.” You can always stick to the handful of firms Weitz and Morningstar consider squeaky clean: Vanguard, T. Rowe Price, American (a broker-sold brand) and Dodge & Cox. (See morningstar.com for more.) It still pays to be a fund investor. Just don’t swim with the sharks.
