According to a Statista poll of parents in the United States with kids aged 5 to 11, as of March 2020, some 57 percent said they were very confident in knowing the websites their children were accessing with a further 34 percent classing themselves as fairly confident.
But while it’s important to monitor internet usage among kids at this age, every once in a while, a parent may end up regretting what they find.
That’s certainly been the case for one unnamed mom who took to TikTok to share a video under the handle issaplus4 showcasing what she uncovered after going through her 8-year-old daughter’s Google search history on her phone.
While the results were far from sinister, they were also far from complimentary. Watch the video here.
The queries started innocently enough. “School supplies”, “what month is June” and “7 year old toys kitchen accessories” were among the most recent.
“Cute purses for $5” and “7 year old birthday ideas” also appeared on the screen. Then came the real kicker. “If my mom’s ugly do I have to be ugly” the search entry read.
“Getting rid of my 8 year old, anyone wants her,” the mom wrote, jokingly, alongside the clip. She wasn’t the only one to see the funny side either with the clip racking up over 800,000 viewers.
Most on social media who watched the video were left stunned at the young girl’s search term.
Cid in the City felt it had left “emotional damage” with Agnes Razelle quipping: “She’s just asking for a friend….”
Imaalyien commented: “I would be distraught.” Birdie was in agreement, writing: “I would cry.” Emily Decker, meanwhile, said: “The next Google search popping up would be adoption agencies if that were me.”
Dinah, meanwhile, was in stitches, calling it “Cold blooded.” Toni Hernandez simply replied: “Grounded.”
Away from the obvious controversy, viewers were similarly amused at the fact she had searched the term “Is God real?” among a glut of searches for lunchware and toys.
“I love how it goes from toy kitchens to pondering God’s existence,” Bunny said. Ghost.bmp found it very relatable as fellow parent, commenting: “mine searched ‘what is the meaning of life’ getting a little too existential for me bud.”
Lindelindeontiktok couldn’t get past the “ugly” search though, writing: “She better hope God’s real after all that.”
