With the help of TikTok and YouTube, the days of bowl cuts in bathrooms are long gone, but this hack has all the nostalgia of being lined up as your parent takes to your locks with kitchen scissors. TikTok user @hansonfamily has claimed that this hack will actually let you “cut the perfect bangs.”
To the tune of Reba McEntire’s “I’m a Survivor,” a song which has recently taken over as a joke audio on the app but was here for a very serious haircutting session, the TikToking mom filmed the hack in action on her daughter.
First, she placed clear tape over the bangs to hold them in place, and then cut them as desired. The idea is that the tape keeps the hair from moving as you cut it and allows you to get a much straighter cut.
After, she took the tape of the hair, being careful to do it gently. “She said it didn’t hurt at all and she thought it was funny,” she confirmed in a comment.
The hack has been viewed over 9 million times. And with over 400,000 likes, it has reached a broad audience, with some even weighing in their own tips on how to improve it. The popular add-on was that you could lower the tape and use the top as a guide for cutting it, making sure to stick the tape in a straight line.
The video may have impressed many as a new trick, but some have been doing it for years already according to the comments. “That’s how my mom used to cut our bangs 30 years ago,” wrote one viewer.
The seemingly successful hack falls as the latest in a long line of out-there tips and tricks offered by TikTok users on how to cut your bangs at home—we have the pandemic to thank for that.
In 2020, TikTok users were twisting their bangs before cutting them, apparently creating a far more natural and messy look, but for most it simply looked lopsided.
As curtain bangs made an overwhelming comeback in the last months, so did attempts to DIY at home. One popular hack suggested people cross over each bang to the other side and then cut it.
