Alexandra Billings, from Anchorage in Alaska, took to Reddit to share her daughter Diana’s answer to the question: “Imagine you had a hundred dollars. You had to give it away to a person or charity. To whom would you give it? What would you want them to do with it?”
Writing underneath, the 7-year-old said: “I would give it to my teacher so that she could buy more stuff because, she may not have enough money! Okay! Oh for stuff she needs like apples, strawberries, soap or things her kids need.”
There is no denying the fact that teachers are feeling the strain of life in the classroom, with a 2021 survey by the RAND Corporation showing a near-50 percent increase in the number of teachers saying they might leave the profession at the end of the school year.
Teaching is a demanding profession, but there are special moments along the way, and that is what Diana’s comments will no doubt provide to her teacher.
There is an extra layer of poignancy to the 7-year-old’s response, though. According to her mother, Alexandra, Diana’s school is closing, and she’s devastated to be losing her friends and teachers.
Alexandra told Newsweek when she first discovered her daughter’s homework in her backpack, her initial reaction was “concern.”
“I wasn’t sure if she should be aware of the school’s financial situation or her teacher’s expenses,” Alexandra said. “But then I realized, it’s natural. We’re so used to being uptight Americans who never share money problems or discuss real-life worries with each other.
“I like that her teacher shares her real, human journey with her kids. Yes, it’s a lot of information for a 7-year-old, but she won’t grow up to be entitled and think everyone in the world has money and that’s important.”
The Reddit post has been upvoted more than 15,000 times, with readers full of praise for the young girl’s considerate response.
“This is adorable,” Seeyou_spacecowbay wrote, with RoundComplete9333 commenting: “This child sees more clearly than most grownups in the US government.”
Redditor Whoa_dude_fangtooth added: “That’s really sweet but also… sad. This 7-year-old kid already understands that teachers are underpaid.”
Alexandra, who works as a messenger for an armored truck company, said her daughter loves “strawberries, rainbows and Minecraft,” but her favorite thing to do is help.
“She always says she wants to grow up faster so she can help homeless people get off the streets, and you can see the pain in her eyes when she sees them on the street corners here in Anchorage,” her mom said.
Alexandra said Diana has been through a lot, with the pandemic and changes at school also causing significant disruption and uncertainty.
Despite this, Diana’s remained an absolute star who has excelled at school, particularly with her spelling, reading and all-round comprehension.
“Diana is top of her class,” her mom said. “Her teacher and she share a special bond, and I’m reluctant to see that go, and so is Diana.” According to Alexandra, around four or five schools in the area are closing, with parents still seeking an answer as to what happens next for their kids’ educations.
“We have a meeting next week with all the parents who are trying to find solutions for the state that don’t involve moving our children out of the school they know and love, and putting them in with teachers they don’t know,” Alexandra said.
Despite this, Diana remains as positive as ever. Her mom’s only hope is that by sharing her homework answer on social media, she may have found a way to not only showcase her daughter’s budding talents but also lift spirits online.
“I wanted to share that photo of her homework to share her amazing heart and hopefully encourage some teachers or lift up someone’s day like it lifted mine,” Alexandra said. “I’m not shocked it was so popular because it genuinely is precious, but I didn’t expect it to gain so much traction.”
