The ex-wife shared her thoughts to Mumsnet, under username Autumnnights2022, where she explained she and her ex were married “a long time.”
They divorced six years ago, after he had an affair with another woman, and got her pregnant within three months of knowing her.
“Needless to say, he wanted to end the marriage. I did not,” she said. She later added he went on to have two kids.
But the mom was annoyed at his attitude to paying her maintenance, which he was ordered to do until he retires, as he drags their now-adult children into the drama, she claimed.
The pair are thought to be based in the U.K., as website www.mediateuk.co.uk explained: “There is no difference between spousal maintenance and alimony in the U.K.
“Spousal maintenance is the legal term used in England and Wales, whilst alimony is a term, usually used in the U.S., to reflect the same thing.”
Alistair Carter, managing director at Mediate UK, told Newsweek: “Spousal Maintenance is one of the more contentious areas of sorting out the finances as part of your divorce.
“It is separate to child maintenance, which is statutory and has a calculator if you cannot agree the amount yourselves. Spousal maintenance is considered usually after the division of assets and is based on both parties’ reasonable budgets moving forwards.”
It’s more prominent among couples who have children under 18, but it can also be ordered in divorces with no kids, or they’ve grown up.
Carter continued: “The court is obligated to see if it can achieve a clean break first of all.
“This is because spousal maintenance keeps an ongoing financial relationship open between the divorced couple and this can cause tension and stress in the family, such as in this Mumsnet post.
“It can also be varied as circumstances change, which can lead to couples returning to court time and again.
“Every case and circumstance is different and many couples do prefer a clean break financially, but this is not always possible to achieve a fair split.”
The ongoing financial link is what was causing a thorn in the mom’s side, as she claimed her ex moaned about money via their kids as they have “no contact.”
In the post, she wrote: “He dragged me through the courts at eye watering costs and has been made to pay a percentage of his salary as maintenance until he retires. We have two kids together.”
She claimed her ex appeared to flaunt his wealth, while simultaneously complaining about the maintenance.
“He’s forever telling our now adult kids that ‘he’s skint’ (then OW [other woman] posts photos of them on yet another holiday abroad) and yesterday, he told our daughter that the birthday money he promised for her birthday 10 days ago ’ would be late, as I have to pay your mum money… so I’ll have to ask work for an advance’.
“Note that three weeks ago he had enough money for a deposit on a 4-bed house.”
The chart below, provided by Statista, shows expensive divorces.
She signed off by saying he used to be the “kindest” and most “generous” man, and she didn’t understand his attitude to finances.
The post, entitled “ex husband’s bitterness towards having to pay maintenance,” has amassed nearly 160 responses since being shared on Tuesday.
But the mom found little support online, as Dirtylittleroses said: “I don’t understand what you don’t get. He’s split from you, it’s long over and he needs to still pay for you. It’s the ultimate meal ticket. He doesn’t need to like it.”
WhenDovesFly commented: “They’re not children, you say yourself they’re adults now. Why are you not supporting yourself?”
Although Pointythings added: “If the court ordered spousal maintenance he’s clearly a very high earner. Sucks to be him, bring on the tiny violin. He cheated.”
While SuperCamp wrote: “He is despicable for dragging the kids into it. But this is why a clean break is best. Personally, if at all possible, I would get a job, anything to be independent of a despicable man who resented me.”
In response to the comments, the mom claimed her ex was a “high earner,” confirming; “I get maintenance as the courts make sure that in a long marriage and life aboard, both spouses should get equal, etc.”
Newsweek was not able to verify the details of the case.
