When we arrived at the place from which we would begin our trek, the head guide showed us the restricted area on a map, where we would hike, how long it took, where we would stop for breakfast, that sort of thing. I wasn’t worried until he said Merapi is one of the five most active volcanoes in the world. Then I got a little scared. Hiking up in the pitch black wasn’t so bad–time quickly passed. By the time we got to our lookout place, the sun was coming up. All you could see of the volcano was a tiny orange glow at the very top that you could follow down until it was gone. I’m not sure it was worth it, but now I can say I’ve skied a volcano, hiked a volcano, and I’ve seen lava on a volcano! PRETTY COOL!!!!
