When I got there, everyone was in pajamas and ready for bed, and it was only 7 p.m. We all watched a movie, but halfway through, the mother said she was going to put the smallest kids to bed, and then all the parents would go up to the big house for drinks, and then finally come back, check on the kids, and leave. She gave me the telephone number (just in case), information on how to use the TV guide, and free access to the fridge!
Everyone was asleep except for the second oldest child. I let her stay up for the rest of the movie. At 8 p.m. the house was totally silent. I started to get lonely and extremely bored, so I risked breaking the Babysitters’ Code of Etiquette. Oh, well! I called Mommy. She and I wondered over the phone about how much money I would get. Mom thought I would get a dollar per hour (I was really appalled). For four hours, I thought 20 bucks seemed fair. Then we hung up. After finding the TV too hard to work, I broke down and called Mommy again, and she suggested watching another movie. Of course, the only movie on was “The Land Before Time III.” I reluctantly watched it through to the end. Then I called Mommy again. After our final conversation, I sat back and read Town & Country. A half an hour later, I heard the wonderful sound of car tires on gravel. I knew I was relieved of my duty and was very ready for bed.
Oh, and I was paid forty bucks. Whoo Hoo!!
