Chicago was left thin in the infield after third baseman Gordon Beckham signed with the Braves as a free agent and the team declined its option on shortstop Alexei Ramirez. Lawrie adds versatility, too; he has played 80 games at second base in the majors.

Wendelken, 22, is on his third organization before throwing a major league pitch. He was drafted by the Red Sox in 2012 and traded to the White Sox a year later in the Jake Peavy deal. He split last season between Double-A Birmingham and Triple-A Charlotte, compiling a 6-2 record and a 3.81 ERA in 59 innings, all in relief.

Erwin, 21, was drafted by the White Sox in the fourth round this year out of Clemson. He posted a 1.34 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 40 1/3 innings between rookie-level Great Falls and Single-A Kannapolis.
