Samardzija is 4-3 with a 3.86 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in 10 starts with the A’s, and that includes a 2-1 mark in four starts against AL West opponents – though it’s important to note he’s faced Houston three times and Seattle once .

The Angels have averaged 5.3 runs over their past six games while the A’s have averaged 3.7 runs in that same span, so make no mistake, the Halos are playing better right now.

But the pitching matchup trumps everything here. Rasmus had a 4.18 ERA and a ridiculously poor 5.1 BB/9 ratio in the minors this year. That might be palatable if he struck out a lot of batters, but his 7.7 K/9 ratio is average, at best. The A’s lead the majors in walks, so they should wear out Rasmus in a hurry and put a lot of runners on base. As long as Samardzija just does what he’s been doing since donning the green and gold, Oakland has a major advantage.
