From time to time throughout the offseason, we’ll update this list to add signings, and offer a comment or two about those signings.
FOSTER: Why MLB can’t afford a work stoppage now
A quick note on Eric Thames, who signed a three-year, $16 million deal with the Brewers : Because he played in Korea the past couple seasons, he wasn’t on the MLBPA free-agent list, so he’s not on this ranking. But that could wind up being a very good move for Milwaukee.
Yoenis Cespedes, OF Re-signed with Mets. Deal: Four years, $110 million. Notable: Mets fans had to love the signing. Cespedes has become a bit of a folk hero since the team acquired him in a trade with the Tigers in 2015, and this lineup definitely needed the power that he supplies. Don’t be surprised if this is the only $100 million contract handed out this offseason by any team.
Edwin Encarnacion, 1B/DH Signed with Indians. Deal: Three years, $60 million, plus an option for a fourth season. Notable: The Blue Jays were offering four years and $80 million early in the offseason, so Encarnacion and his agent did not do better with the Indians’ deal. For that $60 million, Cleveland is getting one of the premier right-handed sluggers in the majors, although he will turn 34 in January. 3. Dexter Fowler, CF Signed with Cardinals. Deal: Five years, $82 million.4. Kenley Jansen, RP Re-signed with Dodgers. Deal: Five years, $80 million, with a player opt-out in 2019
Aroldis Chapman, RP Signed with Yankees. Deal: Five years, $86 million. Notable: The flamethrowing left-hander wanted to return to the Bronx, and the Yankees made it worth his while. The reported agreement (which includes an opt-out after three seasons) sets the record for largest contract given to a closer. The question now is: Will Chapman provide enough value? Paying him record dollars to be a one-inning pitcher is risky.6. Ian Desmond, CF Signed with Rockies. Deal: Five years, $70 million. Notable: This deal is a head-scratcher. Colorado has no clear place for Desmond at the moment. (Maybe first base? That would be another new position for him to learn.) On the other hand, the addition does allow the Rox to trade from its outfield surplus, in particular Charlie Blackmon and Carlos Gonzalez.7. Justin Turner, 3B Re-signed with Dodgers Deal: Four years, $64 million.8. Mark Melancon, RP Signed with Giants. Deal: Four years, $62 million. Notable: Melancon held the record for largest contract for a closer until the Yankees snagged Chapman. The Giants are paying out of desperation: Melancon represents a significant upgrade over the beleagured late-inning group in San Francisco last season.9. Rich Hill, SP Re-signed with Dodgers. Deal: Three years, $48 million.
Mark Trumbo, DH/1B/RF Re-signed with Orioles. Deal: Three years, $37.5 million.11. Neil Walker, 2B Accepted one-year, $17.2 million qualifying offer from the Mets.
Jose Bautista, RF Re-signed with Blue Jays. Deal: One year, $18 million13. Wilson Ramos, C Signed with Rays. Deal: Two years, $12.5 million. Notable: The second year is the key one, because Ramos is likely to miss part of the 2017 season as he recovers from knee surgery.
Matt Wieters, C Signed with Nationals. Deal: Two years, $21 million, with a player option for the second year.15. Mike Napoli, 1B/DH Signed with Rangers. Deal: One year, $8.5 million, plus a team option for 2018.16. Josh Reddick, RF Signed with Astros. Deal: Four years, $52 million. Notable: Reddick slides nicely into the Houston outfield as a Gold Glove right fielder, and the lineup, too, as a lefty in a right-handed-dominated offense.
Jason Hammel, SP Signed with Royals. Deal: Two years, $16 million.
Ivan Nova, SP Re-signed with Pirates Deal: Three years, $26 million
Carlos Beltran, DH/RF Signed with Astros. Deal: One year, $16 million.
Carlos Gomez, OF Re-signed with Rangers. Deal: One year, $11.5 million.21. Michael Saunders, OF Signed with Phillies22. Jeremy Hellickson, SP Accepted one-year, $17.2 million qualifying offer from Phillies.
Brandon Moss, OF/1B Signed with Royals24. Kendrys Morales, DH Signed with Blue Jays. Deal: Three years, $33 million. Notable: Morales gives the Blue Jays, who won’t keep both (or either?) Edwin Encarnacion or Jose Bautista, proven power at the DH spot.
Bartolo Colon, SP Signed with Braves Deal: 1 year, $12.5 million Notable: Mets fans are heartbroken, pretty much.
Luis Valbuena, 3B Signed with Angels27. Brad Ziegler, RP Signed with Marlins28. Rajai Davis, OF Signed with Athletics 29. Colby Lewis, SP 30. Doug Fister, SP31. Sean Rodriguez, UT Signed with Braves. Deal: Two years, $11.5 million. Notable: This is an outstanding signing by the Braves. Rodriguez can play pretty much any position aside from catcher, and will hit his way into the lineup on most nights.
Andrew Cashner, SP Signed with Rangers. Deal: One year, $10 million. Notable: Cashner’s free-agent-to-be season was kind of a disaster (5.25 ERA/4.84 FIP) and this one-year deal is a chance for him to bounce back.
Pedro Alvarez, DH/1B34. Mitch Moreland, 1B/DH Signed with Red Sox. Deal: One year, $5.5 million. Notable: Moreland isn’t Big Papi, but he does hit left-handed and will play Papi’s positions.35. Neftali Feliz, RP Signed with Brewers36. Joaquin Benoit, RP Signed with Phillies 37. Joe Blanton, RP38. Dae-ho Lee, 1B Signed with Lotte Giants (Korea)
Matt Holliday (Getty Images)
Matt Holliday, OF/DH Signed with Yankees. Deal: One year, $12 million.
Austin Jackson, OF Signed with Indians41. Sergio Romo, RP Signed with Dodgers42. Edinson Volquez, SP Signed with Marlins. Deal: Two years, $22 million. Notable: Miami was in search of rotation help and settled on the durable, but inconsistent (5.37 ERA in 2016 after a 3.55 ERA in 2015), Volquez.43. Colby Rasmus, CF Signed with Rays44. Jon Jay, OF Signed with Cubs. 45. Coco Crisp, OF46. Steve Pearce, UT Signed with Blue Jays. Deal: Two years, $12.5 million. Notable: Toronto adds a right-handed option to its first base and outfield mixes. Pearce also could serve as a backup second baseman. 47. Clayton Richard, SP Re-signed with Padres48. Joe Smith, RP Signed with Blue Jays49. Greg Holland, RP Signed with Rockies50. Drew Storen, RP Signed with Reds51. Travis Wood, RP Signed with Royals52. Adam Lind, 1B Signed with Nationals 53. Justin Morneau, 1B/DH54. Brett Anderson, SP Signed with Cubs55. Koji Uehara, RP Signed with Cubs. Deal: One year, $4.5 million.56. Mark Reynolds, 1B Re-signed with Rockies57. Derek Holland, SP Signed with White Sox58. Franklin Gutierrez, OF Signed with Dodgers59. Santiago Casilla, RP Signed with Athletics60. Nick Hundley, C Signed with Giants61. Dustin McGowan, RP Re-signed with Marlins. Deal: One year.62. Matt Belisle, RP Signed with Twins63. Brandon Morrow, RP Signed with Dodgers64. Jerry Blevins, RP Re-signed with Mets65. Marc Rzepczynski, RP Signed with Mariners. Deal: Two years, $11 million.66. James Loney, 1B Signed with Rangers67. Michael Dunn, RP Signed with Rockies68. Yusmeiro Petit, RP Signed with Angels69. Logan Morrison, 1B Re-signed with Rays70. Aaron Hill, 2B Signed with Giants71. Brett Cecil, RP Signed with Cardinals. Deal: Three years, $30.5 million. Notable: With lefties Zach Duke and Tyler Lyons on the shelf long term with injuries, the Cardinals needed a reliable lefty in the bullpen, so they acted quickly to lock up Cecil.

Ryan Vogelsong, SP Signed with Twins73. R.A. Dickey, SP Signed with Braves. Deal: One year, $8 million. Notable: If Dickey, who’s 42, gives the Braves 30 starts and 175 innings, they’d be thrilled.
David Hernandez, RP Signed with Giants75. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C Signed with Blue Jays 76. Luke Hochevar, RP

Angel Pagan, OF 78. Kelly Johnson, 2B79. Jhoulys Chacin, SP Signed with Padres80. Peter Bourjos, OF Signed with White Sox81. Chase Utley, 2B Re-signed with Dodgers82. Junichi Tazawa, RP Signed with Marlins83. Fernando Salas, RP Signed with Mets84. Michael Bourn, OF Signed with Orioles85. Fernando Rodney, RP Signed with Diamondbacks. Deal: One year, $2.75 million.86. Tommy Hunter, RP Signed with Rays87. Jason Castro, C Signed with Twins. Deal: Three years, $24.5 million. Notable: Castro, as you’ve heard touted often this offseason, is an outstanding pitch-framer, a skill the Twins obviously value.
Javier Lopez, RP89. Jesse Chavez, RP Signed with Angels. Deal: One year, $5.75 million. Notable: Chavez will get a chance to earn a rotation spot, but has value as a reliever if that doesn’t work out in spring training.
Charlie Morton, SP Signed with Astros. Deal: Two years, $14 million. Notable: Morton’s had problems staying healthy (he only made four starts in 2016), but he’s been relatively effective when on the mound. In 69 starts for the Pirates in 2013-15, Morton had a 3.94 ERA and 2.84 FIP.
Peter Moylan, RP Re-signed with Royals92. Erick Aybar, SS Signed with Padres93. Matt Joyce, OF Signed with Athletics. Deal: Two years, $11 million. Notable: Oakland gets a platoon outfielder with power cheaply. Yep, Oakland being Oakland.94. Boone Logan, RP Signed with Indians95. Gavin Floyd, RP Re-signed with Blue Jays96. Daniel Descalso, UT Signed with Diamondbacks97. Joe Nathan, RP Signed with Nationals98. Kurt Suzuki, C Signed with Braves
(Ryan Howard)
- Ryan Howard, DH100. Blaine Boyer, RP Signed with Braves101. Stephen Drew, UT Re-signed by Nationals102. Andrew Bailey, RP Re-signed with Angels. Deal: One year, $1 million. Notable: Bailey was good with the Angels after the Phillies released him in August, rolling up a 2.38 ERA in 12 appearances, so returning to Anaheim made sense.

Ellis, C Signed with Marlins. Deal: One year, $2.5 million. Notable: Ellis replaces Jeff Mathis as Miami’s veteran backup to J.T. Realmuto. He is reunited with Marlins manager Don Mattingly, one of his former skippers with the Dodgers. Unfortunately for the two of them, Clayton Kershaw is not coming to South Florida. 119. Ryan Raburn, UT Signed with Reds120. Daniel Hudson, RP Signed with Pirates121. Andres Blanco, INF Re-signed with Phillies122. Alex Avila, C Signed with Tigers 123. Chris Capuano, RP124. Drew Stubbs, OF Signed with Twins125. Drew Butera, C Signed with the Royals Deal: 2 years, $3.8 million Notable: Butera has been a good fit as K.C.’s backup catcher the past few seasons, and it made sense for both parties to extend the relationship.
