The veteran left-hander will not be on the active roster for the ALDS against the Twins, manager Aaron Boone said at a news conference Thursday. Boone said Sabathia had discomfort in his shoulder after a relief outing last week and had a cortisone shot in an attempt to alleviate the pain. They may be the wild cards in the American League, but the A’s have as many wins as every National League playoff team but the Dodgers (97) and the Rays (96) have more than the Cardinals, Nationals and Brewers. Both of these teams are good, they just happen to have gotten unlucky and were stuck in divisions with the Astros and Yankees. So now, these two teams face off Wednesday for the right to take on the Astros in the divisional round, but they could very well get past the Astros and win it all....

When prospects are coming up through the minors and lighting up the lower levels, it’s easy to dream on the upside: “This batter is going to have several 40-40 seasons”; “This pitcher will anchor the rotation”’; “This hitter will be in the mix for annual batting titles.” Because of that upside, teams are often reluctant to trade prospects for stars in the manner that the Padres did when they sent the Nationals three players who began the year in MLB Pipeline’s Top 100, and another who is in the midseason Top 100....
Things got started Sunday with the first big-name player moved when the Blue Jays sent Marcus Stroman to the Mets. It’s got only crazier from there as the Astros landed starting pitcher Zack Greinke from the Diamondbacks. Just ask the Phillies. Philadelphia held a seemingly safe 7-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh in Atlanta, but watched as the Braves rallied for a 9-8 win to claim their eighth straight victory. Catcher Brian McCann, who started the rally with a solo homer to lead off the seventh, walked it off for Atlanta with a two-out, two-run single into the gap off Phillies closer Héctor Neris....
The Nationals third baseman hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to put his team ahead of the Braves for good. Washington went on to beat Atlanta, 6-3. Juan Soto and Trea Turner also brought in runs as the Nationals moved to 57-49 and 4 1/2 games behind the National League East-leading Braves. Atlanta tried to chip away at its deficit with a run in the ninth, but it wasn’t enough to catch up to Washington....
The Nationals topped the Phillies 4-1 before beating them 6-5 later on in the day. Washington wasn’t great offensively in the first matchup, but Anthony Rendon brought in two of the team’s four runs with two sacrifice flies. He leads MLB in RBIs with a total of 124 in 2019. Philadelphia was more competitive in the second game and got two home runs and four RBIs from Brad Miller....

The game will be played in Los Angeles, with LAFC topping No. 2 seed Austin FC in the Western Conference final. As LAFC were the Supporters’ Shield winners, it was known they would host the final no matter who emerged from the Eastern Conference. In the nightcap, No. 1 seed Philadelphia Union took down No. 3 seed New York City FC in the Eastern Conference final. With the score 0-0 at halftime, NYCFC took an early second-half lead, but that woke up the Union, and they scored three unanswered to go through....
State police say Jose Rivero of White Plains unlawfully took more than $14,000 in benefits. He was arrested Oct. 6 and charged with two felonies including insurance fraud. The police said they did not know if the 33-year-old Rivero had a lawyer. There was no phone listing for Rivero in White Plains. The Professional Referees Organization, which supervises referees for Major League Soccer and other soccer leagues, said Rivero had been suspended....
A brace from Jozy Altidore helped Eastern Conference leader Toronto to a 4-0 win at home to the San Jose Earthquakes. The win was Toronto’s fifth straight, and Greg Vanney’s men are now assured of a spot in the playoffs. Victor Vazquez opened the scoring for Toronto in the first half before his pass put Altidore through, the United States international making no mistake with his finish for his 50th MLS goal....
With clubs from around the region in two pots, the clear danger for most MLS teams was the chance of being drawn against Costa Rican giants Saprissa or Herediano. The Costa Rican sides will instead face Mexican teams, with MLS clubs largely coming away content with their round of 16 opponents. Herediano will play against recently crowned Liga MX champion Tigres, who also won the 2016 Apertura. The teams will remember each other from last year’s edition of the competition when they were in the same group, which Tigres advanced out of after losing just once....
