Weeks ago, Reeves, a Republican, agreed with the plan in House Bill 384, according to the Associated Press. That bill redraws Mississippi’s congressional boundaries to account for changes in population, but Thompson has criticized the newly redrawn districts’ borders. The bill passed the state’s GOP-majority Senate in a 33-18 vote on January 12, the Clarion-Ledger reported. The legislation expands the 2nd District, Mississippi’s only Black-majority U.S. House district. The plan changes the 2nd District to encompass around 40 percent of Mississippi’s landmass via additions in Franklin, Adams, Wilkinson and Amite counties, four sparsely populated counties originally in the 3rd District, according to the AP....
Republican Gov. Tate Reeves told reporters on Monday it was crucial that at least 80 percent of people wore masks, describing it as “the best weapon we have right now,” in mitigating against the disease which has infected more than 36,000 people in the state. On the same day as his executive order came into effect compelling people to wear masks at public gatherings in 13 counties hardest hit by the disease, Reeves said in a Twitter thread that herd immunity to combat the disease would be impractical....
The legislation calls on K-12 schools, as well as colleges and universities, in the state to designate all sports teams for men and boys, women and girls or “coed,” stating that “athletic teams or sports designated for ‘females,’ ‘women’ or ‘girls’ shall not be open to students of the male sex.” Senate Bill 2536 will effectively prohibit transgender students who identify as women from competing on sports teams designated for that gender....
Reeves’ comments come as Roe’s fate remains uncertain. While hearing arguments Wednesday about a Mississippi law that would ban most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, the conservative majority on the court signaled an openness to overturn Roe. During an interview on CNN Sunday, host Jake Tapper asked Reeves about a law Mississippi has on the books that would automatically ban all abortions—except in cases of rape, or to save the life of the mother—if Roe v....
